Questlove was so moved by Childish Gambino‘s latest album that he woke D’Angelo up at 4 a.m. to tell him about it. Zoe Kravitz praised the album on Instagram. Drizzy cosigned in her comments.

Awaken, My Love! has made a huge wave among the music community, and now, one of the fathers of P-Funk, whose influence can be heard throughout the project (along with that of Sly and the Family Stone, The Isley Brothers, and more), has given his stamp of approval.

“I just heard it one time and I like the songs,” Parliament-Funkadelic frontman George Clinton told HipHopDX in a recent interview. “I’m aware of his music and know he’s into P-Funk, so I know it’s going to be some good music. I haven’t had a chance to get all the way into it. When I did hear it, it sounded like a cross between P-Funk and Prince influence. I’m proud that he’s into the funk and glad him and others are bringing some new funk back.”

In case you missed it, Gambino spoke to Billboard about Funkadelic’s influence late last month.

Watch Childish Gambino Perform “Redbone” On ‘The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon’

Trailing the success of Awaken, My Love! — which debuted at no. 1 on the R&B charts — a shirtless Donald Glover, known by the music world as Childish Gambino, brought an electric performance of album standout “Redbone” to the Tonight Show stage on Wednesday (December 14).

Glover breathed new life into Awaken‘s shining Bootsy Collins moment with the backing of a band and A1 vocalists. If you thought the studio version was something magical, wait until you watch this — and don’t miss that guitar solo.

Producer Ludwig Goransson on Awaken‘s creative process (via Billboard):

“The whole album started out with me, Donald and a couple musicians just being in the studio together for a week and basically just experimenting, Donald just kind of being open to anything. But it was also taking a step away from computers and to have the whole recording process filled with more air and live performances. I think that opened up a lot of new doors for us.”

We can’t wait for Childish Gambino‘s “Awaken, My Love!” album to drop this Friday, December 2.

After developing and starring in one of the most buzzworthy shows of the year in Atlanta, Gambino is ready to get back on his music tip.

Until recently, Gambino, whose real name is Donald Glover, has remained pretty quiet musically. He’s released the funk-infused “Me And Your Momma” and “Redbone” in recent weeks and both include a sound we’ve never heard from him before. With just days before the album’s release, Glover updated his Pharos app with virtual reality concert footage from his Joshua Tree in California that can be viewed on iPhones and Androids. He also updated the site with options for purchasing the album which includes a limited-edition poster, and even a “virtual reality vinyl.”

He let fans know about all these updates by deleting all of his previous tweets and telling them to go to his site.

“Awaken, My Love!”  will be Childish Gambino’s first release since his concept album Because The Internet dropped in 2013.

When “Me and Your Mama” dropped last week, our thoughts upon first listen were: “Mannn, there are some serious ‘Maggot Brain’ vibes bopping all up and down this track.”

While Donald Glover — known musically as Childish Gambino — is typically a man of impassioned, wit-packed raps, Awaken, My Love! finds the multi-talent tapping into the psychedelic soul of the ’70s. For those familiar with the era, “Me and Your Mama” is undeniably P-Funk, while “Redbone” — which was premiered by Annie Mac on BBC Radio 1 yesterday — echoes the spirit of legends like Prince and Bootsy Collins.

Glover dates his influence back to childhood.

“I remember listening to songs my dad would play — albums by the Isleys or Funkadelic — and not understanding the feeling I was feeling,” he told Billboard. “I remember hearing a Funkadelic scream and being like, ‘Wow, that’s sexual and it’s scary.’ Not having a name for that, though; just having a feeling. That’s what made it great.”

He also notes a carefree approach in creating Awaken, referring to it as “an exercise in just feeling and tone.”

Taking the similarities between today’s social climate and that of the ’70s into consideration, Glover’s approach couldn’t be more timely.

“It felt like people were trying to get out of their minds, with all the things that were happening — and that are happening right now,” he continued. “How do you start a global revolution, really? Is that possible with the systems we’ve set up? There’s something about that ’70s black music that felt like they were trying to start a revolution.”

In case you missed it, you can listen to Awaken‘s latest single, “Redbone,” below.

Childish Gambino Confirms New Album, ‘…Awaken, My Love!’

Donald Glover — aka Childish Gambino — has confirmed his upcoming album, …Awaken, My Love! The actor, comedian, and recording artist made the announcement on Wednesday night by sharing the album art on Twitter.

Rumors of a new Childish Gambino album began circulating earlier this week after an FYE album release schedule surfaced online. As Pitchfork points out, the album art first made an appearance in Atlanta‘s “Juneteenth” episode. Atlanta, which has received stellar reviews since its premiere, was renewed mid-season for another 10 episodes.

Glover treated fans to new music back in June when he performed a handful of shows in Joshua Tree, California. On top of a new album and successful television show, he also has a new acting gig to celebrate — Glover was recently cast as Landon Calrissian in the forthcoming Han Solo Star Wars film.

…Awaken, My Love!, which is slated for December 2 release, comes almost exactly three years after Because The Internet.

Add Will Smith‘s name to the growing list of emcees deciding not supporting the 2016 Republican nominee for President.

Lately the chorus of voices expressing their distaste for Donald Trump as the Republican presidential nominee seems to get louder and louder.

In the past few days, Donald Glover (A.K.A. Childish Gambino) and Anderson Paak have all commented on Donald Trump, whether directly or indirectly. They join other artists like YG, The Weeknd, Nas, and T.I., who have been vocally against Trump’s run to the White House.

Will Smith is the latest emcee to express his thoughts about Trump in a recent press conference for the movie Suicide Squad.

Childish Gambino recently performed in Sydney, Australia & let the audience shook after he went in on this freestyle. Gambino’s dropped names all over the mark starting at 2:03.

“I’m the best rapper, definitely Top 5….I cut their head off, that’s every rapper living. That’s Kendrick, that’s Drake, that’s Schoolboy, that’s everyone. I don’t give a fuck. I’ll f*cking kill you n*ggas. I’ll f*cking kill you n*ggas”

Childish Gambino Covers PM Dawn + 3 Great Covers From BBC’s Live Lounge

Childish Gambino performingRapper Childish Gambino is out to prove that he can’t be put in to a box. The comedian/actor/rapper appeared on BBC 1Xtra’s “Live Lounge” and surprised everyone by singing. The former “Community” actor performed a cover of PM Dawn‘s signature hit song “I’d Die Without You.” Childish Gambino delivers a very soulful rendition of the song. After seeing it, you’ll definitely wonder what other talents does he have.

BBC 1Xtra’s “Live Lounge” always produces memorable performances from musicians when they have to perform someone else’s music. It was here that Katy Perry attempted to cover Jay Z and Kanye West’s “N*ggas In Paris” to disastrous results. While Perry proved she needed to take several seats with that performance, other artists have shined by singing covers of past hits on “Live Lounge.” Check out a few of my favorites.

Kwabs is a British soul singer who is just breaking through overseas. His brand new EP “Wrong or Right” is heating up the British charts. When he performed on “Live Lounge,” he did one of any R&B lovers’ favorite joints “Don’t Leave Me” by Teddy Riley and the interchanging members of Blackstreet.

Childish Gambino – “Worldstar”/”Poundcake” [NEW MUSIC]

Actor Donald Glover has been giving his rapping alter ego Childish Gambino the full frontal pr treatment with interviews, Instagram meltdowns, Twitter exchanges with other rappers and a flurry of new music to build anticipation for his December 10th release, “But The Internet.”

RELATED: Donald Glover AKA Childish Gambino Talks His Fears And Loneliness On Instagram

In an interview with The Breakfast Club he was asked about a summertime “beef” with rapper Lupe Fiasco and managed to solicit a reaction from the quixotic Chicago rapper that included boasts that he watches more Anime  than he does. Confused? Good, because we think that’s the point with Gambino. He posted Instagram images of scribblings on hotel stationary about “letting everyone down” and “I’m scared I’ll be Tyrese,” that had his former “Community”  co-stars concerned about his well being. But we think he was–and still is—just proving a point about how people use the Internet to manipulate each other.

The track “Worldstar” uses soundclips from the “Fight-of-the-day” mega site to illustrate his musical examination of how they operate.

“Nobody think about it worst case/Best case, we the front page/10K on the first day/Yeah, motherfucker, take your phone out/To record this/Ain’t nobody can ignore this/I’m more or less, I’m more or less individual/Making movies with criminals…”
