EXCLUSIVE: Akon Talks New Artist, The Importance Of Family, & How ‘I Am Caitlyn’ Helped Him Light Up Africa

[ione_embed src= service=youtube width=650 height=360 type=iframe]

Akon always gives back.

Last year, the platinum artist and his electric company Akon Lighting Africa made a commitment to bring electricity to more than 600 million people in Africa without power. When he made the announcement, it basically went unnoticed. Why? The major headline of that week featured the ‘I Am Caitlyn’ cover introducing the world to Caitlyn Jenner.

When Akon stopped by Global Grind to introduce us to his new artist OG Boo Dirty, he explained more about the rollout.

In just three and a half years, Akon’s company is servicing 14 countries in Africa.

“What makes it even better is that we are actually using the locals as the catapult of the project...Now they have jobs, it’s not like you’re handing them anything, it’s not a charity.”

Akon revealed that he wasn’t upset his efforts originally went unnoticed. In fact, he claims the Caitlyn Jenner announcement actually helped him.

“In so many ways, I think the Caitlyn Jenner situation was a blessing for the project. It was because of the Caitlyn Jenner piece that people even noticed what I’m doing. I was just happy that people took notice.”

Akon really doesn’t mind sharing the spotlight. He brought the conversation back to OG Boo Dirty, stressing that the rapper’s love for his family was one of the reasons why he decided to work with him.

“The most blessed people on this earth are the people that take care of their family,” he said.

We couldn’t agree more. Check out the rest of our conversation in the video above.

EXCLUSIVE: David Banner Breaks Down Why Black People Aren’t Ready To Fight White Oppression

[ione_embed src= service=youtube width=650 height=360 type=iframe]

Artist/activist David Banner has been a vessel and promoter of Black liberation for years now, and with the recent death of Alton Sterling at the hands of Baton Rouge police, his message is right on time.

While promoting his forthcoming seventh studio album, The God Box, David stopped by Global Grind to discuss a plethora of issues plaguing American society, the Black community, and hip-hop.

When asked about the Black community’s quest for unequivocal freedom, David replied, “One of my White friends told me this, ‘Look at what White people are doing to Black people. Are they ready for war?’ In these third world countries, them folks are skinny, and hungry, and ready for war. We’re fat, and sloppy, and high. We’re not ready what America has in store for us. The crazy shit about it is, we’re sending our people to hell and not getting paid for it.

“Revolution is when they don’t know it’s coming. Revolution is when they don’t tell you where to protest and what time to protest,” he continued. “For me, the real revolution is when we have the power to get our people together without assistance from the same people who’s oppressing us.”

David also touched on the emergence of hip-hop’s glorification of drug culture, “The molly and the Xanax is a fad…our kids are now the dope users. That’s the ‘cool’ sh*t. Where do they do that at? And it’s our fault. It’s my generation’s fault, because we didn’t instill something different. It’s because there are no strong men around to say no.

David’s forthcoming LP The God Box is due out August 19. In the meantime, watch his enlightening interview up top.

Karrine Steffans On Her Troubled Marriage To Columbus Short: “I’m Trying To Save It”

Karrine Steffans Book Signing For 'SatisFaction'

In a viral photo seen ’round the world Tuesday, actor Columbus Short‘s clothes are scattered on the floor. The former Scandal star is seated in a chair, a book bag separating his back from the seat cushion, his head tilted toward the ground.

The messy photo was one that his wife, Karrine Steffans, posted on social media this week, leaving us all to wonder the inevitable: What the hell did he do now?

Short is no stranger to legal trouble and bad press. He pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor domestic violence charge and pleaded no contest to a felony assault charge in 2014. But over the last year or so, he’s managed to stay out of headlines. Until yesterday morning, that is, when Steffans exposed him for being unfaithful.

Somebody come get @officialcshort cheating ass and all his shit. What about you @aida006…still want him? And @candicernb…you fucked my husband…want him?” she captioned the viral picture.

A video post shows him fixated on the ceiling while a voice, presumably Karrine’s, asks, “Feeling OK?”

It was only a few months ago Karrine and Columbus became #TheShorts. They announced their marriage on social media, sending the Twitterverse into a frenzy. Since then, they’ve shared photos of a seemingly blissful partnership.

While their union seems new to us, in an emotional interview, Karrine tells HelloBeautiful it only appears that way:

“It’s been the Shorts for a while. I know it seems sudden to a lot of people, but it wasn’t. I love my husband. I am completely and totally in love with my husband. I’ve been married three times, he’s been married three times, but he is my first husband, if that makes any sense.”

“I’ve married people in the past who I knew were not my true and rightful husbands. I did it for different reasons, but none of it was really for love,” she added.

Diving into Short’s infidelity issues, she tearfully revealed that it’s hardly a new situation: “I love my husband, but to be honest, I needed us to hit bottom. It’s time.”

“If you’re in an abusive relationship of any kind, and you don’t say anything, and your circle is small […] nobody knows. There’s no help, and it just gets worse. As long as no one knows, there’s no bottom.”

During the candid call, Steffans grew emotional describing her love for her husband: “He’s such a great person in so many ways, in so many ways, but there are demons here we are all aware of.”

Steffans refused to go into detail about what those demons are, but made it clear that only Columbus can conquer them. Unlike her previous marriages, the vixen-turned-author vowed to be monogamous after suffering through unfaithful partners.

“He’s ashamed,” she said. “In the photographs, you can see he’s not happy with himself.”

Steffans confirmed that, despite how it looks, Short wasn’t carrying on a long-term relationship with another woman and it “wasn’t that serious.”

“It happened a while ago and dealing with it internally, there was no recourse. I needed us to hit bottom. And then we can deal with it properly.”

Moreover, it’s Columbus himself, she says, who was honest about his affairs.

“He called me crying,” she told us. “Columbus is not a bad person, he’s just battling things I can’t help him with.”

In spite of his tarnished reputation, Steffans speaks highly of her significant other. “I’m so in love with this man. He’s so good to me and my son. And taking care of our house and such a good provider. He’s not as terrible as everyone made him out to be.”

As for where they will end up from here, she admits she doesn’t have a plan of action: “That’s going to depend on what he wants to do. I made my move.”

Touching on why she decided that her move would be to post the photo on Instagram, she explained:

“If your man’s worst fear is that his mom finds out, then you tell his mom. If his worst fear is that his pastor finds out, then you tell his pastor. If a man’s worst fear is that the public knows that he is not everything he is pretending to be in this moment, then you go there.”

While the ever-watching public eye doesn’t negatively affect Karrine, her decision to make the situation public was deliberate.

“That was this situation’s button. This was his thing, like ‘Please don’t tell anybody about this.’”

Steffans says she pushed the “fear button” to save her marriage.

Short, for his part, also took to social media to comment on the situation:

We hope Karrine and Columbus find a happy and peaceful resolution.

Socially Decoded: Mike Tyson’s Deepest Thoughts Finally Explained

[ione_embed src= service=youtube width=650 height=360 type=iframe]

Iron Mike Tyson is known as one of the baddest men on the planet. He once told a reporter, “My style is impetuous, my defense is impregnable, and I’m just ferocious. I want your heart. I want to eat his children,” but then he had enough respect for the higher power to close his rant with, “Praise be to Allah.”

That quote alone was enough reason for us to get the funniest people on Twitter to try to decipher some of Mike Tyson’s tweets. To our surprise, we discovered that Mike’s 140 characters were rather docile, and very enlightening. So much so, we started to question where he was getting this stuff.

In true Tyson fashion, he let us know that one of the scariest dolls of all time wasn’t that scary, so he decided to do something interesting with it.

Yes, this episode of Socially Decoded might be one of the best. Watch it above.

Black Don’t Crack? Without Moisturizer It Will

60 percent of the human adult body is water. Water is a vital nutrient to the life of every cell in our body. It does more than simply quench our thirst, it regulates our internal body temperature, flushes toxins out of our system, lubricates tissues and joints, and more. With water playing such an important part in our overall ecosystem, it’s astonishing how many women don’t think moisturizing their face is an essential part of ones beauty routine.

Keeping your skin moisturized is the key to keeping it healthy. Dr. Ope Ofodile, Dermatologist, spoke exclusively with Hello Beautiful and explains,

“The primary role of moisturizers is the maintenance of skin hydration. Moisturizers are known to reduce the epidermal water loss via occlusion and addition of lipids, and enhanced water content of the skin contributes to the plasticity, smoothness and skin aesthetics.”

Moisturizer is synonymous with maintenance. Moisturizers keep your skin moisturized, reduces water loss, and keeps skin pliable. Dr. Ofodile, based out of San Francisco, adds,

“Skin hydration is instrumental to appropriate function of the stratum corneum which is the outermost layer of the skin. The stratum corneum protects us from bacteria, oxidants as well as damaging rays of the sun.”

The outer layer of the skin is our first impression. It’s the first thing that people see. By locking in hydration and your natural oils, your skin remains supple and strong. Moisturizer creates a barrier allowing your skin to protect itself from environmental elements, like sun, extreme cold, second-hand smoke other pollutants. With all these environmental factors – it’s not a bad idea to give your skin a little help!

MUST READ: Best Beauty Products of 2015

Moisturizer benefits your skins in the following ways:

Screen Shot 2016-01-05 at 4.03.43 PM

Moisturizers help slow down the process of aging! Use one with SPF 15 for added benefits. Olay Complete All Day Moisture Cream has SPF 15 and protects from both UVA (ultraviolet A – the rays that age us) and UBA (ultraviolet B – the rays that burn us). Dr. Ofodile tells Hello Beautiful,

“UV protection is perhaps one of the most integral component of any anti-aging efforts.  Most moisturizers with reported anti-aging properties contain alpha hydroxyl acids, retinols as well as vitamin C, B and E all shown to enhance the biochemical properties of the skin leading to reduce wrinkles and smoothness of the skin.”

So while ‘black don’t crack’, help to prolong your youthful appearance by wearing moisturizer and sunscreen – everyday.

Good for your health

The most skin-related health problem that women face today is skin cancer. While moisturizing your skin won’t prevent cancer, it will help to treat sun damage. Dr. Ofodile explains, “Due to the improved barrier protection of a well-hydrated skin, the stratum corneum is better able to serve its function of UV protection.” Grab a moisturizer, like this Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer, to help create a protective barrier around your skin from all of the toxins we interact with daily.

Restores moisture to dry skin

There are so many culprits that dry out your skin: using the wrong type of soap, showering too much, living in an extremely dry climate – just to name a few. Moisturizing your skin protects it from dehydration! Oily skin? Don’t skip on moisturizing: a lot of the products you use to prevent shine and acne, strip your skin from its essential oils. Give your skin a boost with moisturizer.

To quench your skin’s thirst, protect yourself aging faster than you must, and overall preserve your skin…moisturizer is a great solution. Choosing one with SPF is extra protection for your skin. Keep your selfie game strong and moisturize on the daily!
