Oprah Winfrey Joins ’60 Minutes’ As Special Correspondent

Since leaving her iconic daytime talk show back in 2011, Oprah Winfrey has kept herself pretty busy with her OWN network by producing and starring in some of the top-rated shows (Queen Sugar, Greenleaf) on the cable network. In addition to producing feature films such as Selma and heading her long-standing O magazine, she is just as busy now as she was when she was invading our living rooms every day. Now however, it appears that her journalism itch needs to be scratched once again and 60 Minutes is willing to fill the void.

According to a new report by USA Today, Oprah Winfrey is set to return to television (and her journalism roots) as a special correspondent for the legendary news program 60 Minutes. This fall, when 60 Minutes enters its 50th season, Oprah Winfrey will step into a new role as a correspondent who will contribute occasional reports for the CBS newsmagazine.

Winfrey released a statement regarding her new role at 60 Minutes and she sounds excited for the opportunity:

“I’ve been a big admirer of ‘60 Minutes’ since my days as a young reporter,” Winfrey said in a statement. “I’m so excited and proud to join forces with this historic news program, which for me represents the bastion of journalistic storytelling. At a time when people are so divided, my intention is to bring relevant insight and perspective, to look at what separates us, and help facilitate real conversations between people from different backgrounds.”

Jeff Fager, executive producer of 60 Minutes, commented on Winfrey presence on the show, stating:

“There is only one Oprah Winfrey,” said ‘60 Minutes’ executive producer Jeff Fager in a statement. “She has achieved excellence in everything she has touched. Her body of work is extraordinary, including thousands of interviews with people from all walks of life. She is a remarkable and talented woman with a level of integrity that sets her apart and makes her a perfect fit for ‘60 Minutes’..”

Well we here at HB can never get enough Oprah and we are so excited to have her going back to her roots. Congrats Mother O!

Here’s How Your Favorite Celebrities Celebrated Thanksgiving

Traditional Stuffed Turkey Holiday Dinner with Vegetables and Pumpkin Pie

Source: GMVozd / Getty

While you were cutting your slice of Turkey and piling on mac-n-cheese, celebrities were doing the same this week for Thanksgiving. In the spirit of love, a lot of celebs put their romantic relationships aside to co-parent and enjoy time with their children.

We also saw a couple dance-offs, baby bumps and delicious plates from individuals who know how to throw down— Ayesha, we’re looking at you!

See how your favorite celebs enjoy Thanksgiving on the next pages.

The Obamas

In the giving spirit, the Obama family served dinner to veterans on Thanksgiving in Washington, D.C. But what had everyone talking was the young man standing next to Sasha— who may be her boyfriend. We can neither confirm nor deny, but we kind of hope he is.

Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon

For the holiday the co-parents spent time with family in Honolulu, Hawaii where they cooked up a storm. In tandem with her extra-ness, Mariah shared photos of her grocery shopping adventures in a low cut jumpsuit, skin tight jeans and heels. But all in all they seemed to have a lovely time— despite their recent divorce, Nick’s new baby on the way and Mariah’s sometimesy fiance, James Packer.

Amber Rose and Wiz Khalifa

Baby Bash was the star of the home for Amber Rose and Wiz Khalifa’s post breakup Thanksgiving. The couple seem to be doing an amazing job at co-parenting, as their son was filled with excitement Thanksgiving morning. When asked what he was thankful for, their 3-year-old said “Halloween decorations, pumpkin pie, chicken and carving pumpkins”— clearly he misses Halloween. Nonetheless, they were spotted as a happy family heading to a party in Los Angeles for the day.

The Wades and the Anthonys

In New York City, the Wades and Anthonys spent another Thanksgiving together but this time, shared a plate with New York Knicks’ player Derrick Rose. Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade posed in the hallway for cute pics— but it’s not clear if Dwyane’s sons were with them. Also in attendance were La La’s cousin Dice and friend Po, who had some fun on SnapCHat with the girls.

Ciara and Russell Wilson

Ciara and her baby had a big plate of goodness during her first Thanksgiving as a married woman. The couple who are welcoming a baby soon, spent the day before at a Seattle Children’s Hospital to spread joy.

Teyana Taylor and Iman Shumpert

Newlyweds Teyana and Iman Shumpert celebrated their first Thanksgiving with baby Junie, who was dressed up as a turkey for the occasion. While Shumpert is working on another championship ring with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Teyana is promoting her Fade2Fitness workout videos.

Kelly Rowland and Tina Knowles Lawson

Close as ever, Kelly Rowland spent the holiday with Tina Lawson and cousin Angie in Los Angeles. Earlier in the week they were in Baton Rouge with Solange for the Hometown Heroes awards in conjunction with BeyGood and Essence. To occasion was to raise funds for post hurricane relief in the mainly black Louisiana city.

Chrissy Teigen and John Legend

As always, Chrissy Teigen was getting busy in the kitchen while simultaneously giving cooking advice on Twitter. The cookbook author and foodie also shared video of the family at work in the kitchen. In this video, John shows off his mac n cheese skills.

LL Cool J

The rapper/actor and his beautiful family enjoyed the holiday with some bonding time. Him and his wife, Simone Smith who share four kids together, celebrated 21 years of marriage this year.

Ayesha and Stephen Curry

As expected, Ayesha cooked up a storm for her hubby and family. On the menu this year was creamed spinach, orange and honey sweet potato casserole, deviled eggs, cranberry sauce, ham and mac n cheese— have mercy!

Oprah Winfrey

Queen Oprah invited a group of girls from her South African school to spend the holiday with her. But days before she was in Milwaukee enjoying family time with Btedman Graham, cooking so much that the kitchen was a warm 83 degrees.

The Braxtons

Always having fun, the Braxton shared a meal but not before having a dance party in their living room. Toni, who’s suffered from health issues this year, was front and center shaking her butt for the camera. So good to see her joyful!

Oprah Winfrey Responds To Backlash Over Recent Trump Comments

Understandably, many Americans are still highly emotional over the presidential election of Donald Trump and that means that statements from public figures regarding the election are even more highly scrutinized than usual. Oprah Winfrey found this out the hard way last week when she gave her thoughts on President Obama’s and Trump’s first meeting. Many felt her statements sounded like an endorsement for the president-elect and they quickly took to social media to voice their concerns.

Deciding to address the social media firestorm she found herself in, Winfrey addressed the backlash she received over her Trump comments. While speaking during a Q&A with Ava DuVernay for her documentary film The 13th, Winfrey clarified her remarks. The Huffington Post has her comments on the matter and more.

Via Huffington Post:

During a Q&A between Winfrey and Ava DuVernay after a screening of the documentary “13th,” Oprah addressed the backlash to her tweet, reportedly telling the crowd, “Y’all heard about my tweet problems?” according to Entertainment Weekly. In the discussion, Winfrey expanded upon her initial tweet and acknowledged her mistake in calling for a unified response to an incredibly divisive moment in American history.

“I couldn’t breathe after the election,” she said. “I was expecting tension, awkwardness, and strain … so when I saw them sitting together, I actually took a picture of the screen that said ‘President-elect Trump honored to meet Obama.’ And President Obama was being so gracious, and I heard Donald Trump say, ‘He’s a good man.’ I heard Donald Trump say, ‘I’m going to be seeking his counsel.’ I literally went [deep breath], ‘I can breathe now.’”

Winfrey continued, “My mistake, and this is what I know to be true: You can never talk about everybody … Even in your arguments with your husband and your children. Don’t talk about what you should do, what you ought to do — you can only speak for yourself. So what I should have said was, ‘I just took a breath.’” The media icon also admitted that if she could do it again, she’d likely change the hashtag to #CivilityLives instead of #HopeLives because the transition of power was “more civil than I expected it to be.”

Winfrey, who was an unapologetic, vocal supporter of the Obama administration and Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign, is apparently as stunned as many of us by Trump’s win. Yet because social media is tracking what she does, the world will be able to witness how she grapples with the country’s new government and ideological shift.

Oprah Winfrey’s Hopeful Trump Comments Enrage Social Media

Oprah Winfrey at Essence Empowerment Experience

Here’s the real deal: Many of us are still enraged about Donald Trump becoming president elect.

Shoot.. many of us refuse to even call him the President of the United States come January. But anger, doesn’t erase reality. And the reality is, if all goes according to his plan, we’ll have to deal with a Trump administration for the next four years.

For some of us this means being critical and on-edge for his entire tenure. But for others, they’ve taken a more hopeful approach to the whole thing. But sometimes hopeful comes off as affirming when dealing with such a serious matter.

Enter, our beloved Oprah Winfrey.

When asked by the Entertainment Tonight about Trump’s meeting with President Barack Obama to tour the White House on Thursday she said, “I just saw president elect Trump with President Obama in the White House and it gave me hope. To hear president elect Trump say he had respect for Obama, he had reached a moment where he was humbled by that experience. And to hear President Obama say he has a new confidence in a peaceful transition— I think everybody can take a deep breath. Take a deep breath now!”

Later, she doubled down on the statement, tweeting, “Everybody take a deep breath! #HopeLives!”

But instead of embracing her kumbaya vibe, the internet exploded in upset over her “hopeful” rhetoric.

The sentiment of other’s is understood. While we see where Winfrey is coming from, it was too early and a little to rosy to think from one meeting all will be well. Especially if we consider all the disgusting rhetoric used against Obama by Trump.

It’s also dangerous to gloss over years of racist epithets and misogynist beliefs, for the good of moving on. Because what good is being president or president elect if we don’t hold the individual accountable for their past actions?

You Won’t Believe What Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo Studios In Chicago Is Turning Into

'Queen Sugar' Private Dinner

Oprah Winfrey said a final farewell to her Harpo Productions office space and studio, in Chicago, where for decades she filmed The Oprah Winfrey Show. This time, though, it was more bitter than sweet.

Several months ago, she took to Instagram to thank the local employees one last time before closing the doors for good:

Winfrey returned on Wednesday to oversee the demolition of the building, and lamented the fact that building will soon only exist in her memories:

What makes the change even more tragic is what it is being turned into: the new McDonald’s corporate headquarters, which is set to open in 2018. Winfrey’s presence in the windy city is being replaced by Big Macs. 😢

Watch an old tour of the studio space long before the demolition took place.

Luckily, while her old headquarters is gone, Oprah is far from leaving the world of entertainment herself. It was just announced that she will star in an upcoming Ava DuVernay film, A Wrinkle In Time.

So while some may be mourning the loss of the Chicago studio space, Winfrey seems more than ready to move on to the next stage of her career.

He’s been arrested three times for domestic abuse and he may soon have another charge to evade. George was recently suspended from Twitter for posting half-nude photos as well as the name, number and email address of his former girlfriend who he accused of cheating on him with a “dirty Muslim”. The photos were in violation of Twitter’s policy which forbids users from posting another persons contact information without their consent. Zimmerman may also face federal charges of cyberharassment and stalking if his ex-girlfriend decides to press charges. [NY Magazine]

Chicago Mayor Will Release Video Footage Of Another Black Man’s Murder

For the past year, the city of Chicago and the family of Ronald Johnson III have been embattled in court over the release of footage depicting the 25-year-old’s murder. In October 2014, Johnson was shot by officer George Hernandez after the victim allegedly pulled out a gun during a foot chase. Following the uprisings in Chicago that have ensued after Laquan McDonald’s video footage was released, mayor Rahm McDonald is attempting to display a convoluted since of transparency between the police and the public. Within the past week, 14-months after Johnson’s death, state attorney general Anita Alvarez said she will look into filing charges against Hernandez. [Chicago Tribune]

On being the first African American woman to achieve this feat, Robinson said, “I am so excited. I am overwhelmed, it’s really indicative of the community we have. 60 years ago today, Rosa Parks sat down so I could stand.” Robinson’s political experience includes serving on the Douglasville-Douglas County Water and Sewer Authority as well as the Douglasville City Council from 2002 to 2006. [Clutch Magazine]

Oprah Lands 8-Figure Deal For New Memoir

Legendary journalist, philanthropist and entrepreneur, Oprah Winfrey has always been transparent about her life including the death of her only son, Canaan, the struggles she face with her weight as well as the her uphill battle with the launch of her network. Fans of Winfrey probably believe they know everything there is to know about the billionaire, however, she has more to share. Winfrey just inked a reported 8-figuredeal with Flatiron Books for her new memoir, The Life You Want. The multi-million dollar deal will also give Winfrey her own book imprint where she’ll publish several non-fiction titles per year. [USA Today]

Bill Cosby’s Wife May Have To Testify In Defamation Suit

Camille Cosby has been relatively silent amidst the sexual assault scandal that has marred the legacy of her husband of over fifty years. While many of Cosby’s alleged victims are past the statue of limitations for pressing charges in their assault cases, seven women have banned together to file a defamation suit against the comedian. When the proceedings begin in January 2016, Camille may be deposed under oath. “She is intimately involved in Mr. Cosby’s life, both personally and professionally, and she has information that we wish to have that is relevant to the case,” said Joseph Cammarata, a lawyer representing the seven women. This is the first of four defamation suits Cosby will have to endure within the next year from ten of the approximately fifty five women that he’s allegedly victimized over the thirty years. [NY Times]

Did You Know Oprah Had A ‘Secret Son’ That Tried To Extort Money From Her?

Instagram Photo

Nearly 25 years ago, Oprah reportedly tried to adopt a young man named Calvin Mitchell that she met on set of her TV film, There Are No Children Here. According to People, the talk show host was, “taken by the boy and wanting to help when she found out he and his family were stuck in the projects.”

A proponent of education, she enrolled the then 11-year-old in a local private school and relocated the family to a better neighborhood. Eventually she learned Calvin wasn’t going to class. Supposedly, it was because there were no clocks in the house and the family wasn’t aware of how late he was arriving to school.

“We went out, Stedman and I, went to K-Mart that moment, got a bag full of clocks, came back to the house, taught them how to set the alarm and all that” Oprah recalled to Entertainment Tonight.

However, her new protege was still expelled for truancy and low performance. “I had a long conversation with him about how disappointed I was but I was going to give him another chance,” Winfrey explained to Nancy O’Dell.

“I found a school in Mississippi that was a private boarding school because I thought if I could remove him from the environment that he’d been accustomed to growing up in, that maybe that would be helpful to him.”

Unfortunately, Calvin didn’t do any better at the new school and she cut ties with the family in the 90s.

The billionaire mogul has been making her rounds in the press to discuss her new multi-million dollar Weight Watchers deal. Outside of a taping of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, Calvin was waiting for Oprah and attempted to ambush her, yelling and appearing visibly shaken, he asked if they could talk.

“I said to somebody on my team, ‘Will somebody get Calvin’s number so I can contact him later…When I realized the whole thing was a setup, I was no longer interested in speaking to him.”

Before Calvin showed up at the taping, he had already sold his story of his experience growing up with Oprah to The National Enquirer.

Fortunately, the 61-year-old media mogul was able to take away an important lesson from the situation.

“If you really want to change somebody’s life, you gotta be able to spend enough time with them to change the way they think about what their life can be. It isn’t enough to give a person a new life or money or a new car, you have to teach them how to fish themselves.”

Alicia Watkins Goes From Homeless Veteran To Student At Harvard University

[ione_embed src=https://www.youtube.com/embed/YGSleGw5Xac service=youtube width=600 height=315 type=iframe]

In 2010, Alicia Watkins, a retired U.S. Air Force staff sergeant, shocked friends and family when she documented her travails as a homeless veteran on video for The Oprah Winfrey Show, reports the Huffington Post.

The 10-year-veteran, who served tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, was left with a series of health issues, including post-traumatic stress disorder, and injuries to her brain and spinal cord, rendering her unable to work, notes the news outlet. Left with little money and few employment options, she became homeless and lived out of a car that she rented for $10 daily.

Now, nearly five years later, she is back with a different story. In a video submitted to Oprah: Where Are They Now, she is no longer homeless and is enrolled at Harvard University, the report says.

“I wanted to be able to care for wounded warriors, and so I decided to apply to Harvard University,” she says in the video. “In 2012, I was accepted. My college expenses are paid by the G.I. Bill.”

Her personal life has also made a dramatic improvement.

“I recently got engaged, on my birthday of all days,” she says. “It is amazing.”

Thanks for sharing your inspirational story, Alicia! Good luck to you.

Raven-Symoné Explains Why She Doesn’t Consider Herself African-American [VIDEO]

Source: Vincent Sandoval/Getty Images / Getty

Raven-Symoné is setting the record straight on why she doesn’t want to be called African-American. Last year the Cosby Show and That So Raven alum nearly broke the internet (sorry Kim) when she sat with Oprah Winfrey for an interview on OWN’s Oprah: Where Are They Now? series and proclaimed she isn’t African-American. Many felt as though Raven didn’t consider herself black, which prompted a serious backlash for the former child star.

MUST READ: Raven-Symoné Defends Remarks She Made On ‘The View’

Even though the Empire star clarified her comment, it still didn’t sit well with folks and she once again explained her remarks with E! News’ Alicia Quarles.  Raven stated:

I never said I wasn’t black. I said I wasn’t African American and to me, that’s a difference. Thank you to Ancestry.com, actually for sending me my DNA test! I am from every continent in Africa, except for one and I’m from every continent from Europe except for one. We went back super far, and for the last 400 years, my family’s been living in Virginia. We are a melting pot of beauty. We have to embrace the different cultures we have. And if you don’t, we’re still gonna have these problems that are blasting up everywhere. And call me hippie, call me a free-thinker, call me someone that’s looking for a better life, but I wanna be in a better world.

Do you agree with Raven? Watch the interview below.

Can you imagine anyone else besides Tika Sumpter portraying the cold as ice vixen Candace Young in Tyler Perry’s The Haves & The Have Nots? It nearly happened, but was prevented by the one and only Oprah Winfrey! Tika dropped by The Real today where she gave the hosts and viewers a little dish on what’s to come on the latest season of the hit OWN drama. While Tika chopped it up with the panel along with guest co-host NeNe Leakes, the actress recalled how media titan Oprah cajoled her into starring on the series. Tika recalled:

“Tyler Perry called me and he’s like you know, ‘I want you to do this.’ And I said, ‘Well, let me think about it because I always play usually the girlfriend or the wife.’ He’s like, ‘Tika, hold on one second, someone wants to speak to you,’ she’s like ‘Tiiiiiiikaaaaaa!’ You know and I’m like ‘Uh.
