Remember the days when music videos were rolled out on a red carpet like treatment on MTV’s TRL? Well on this date in 1999, Nas debuted his controversial video for his hit song “Hate Me Now“.
The song was featured on his album I Am… and was Nas taking the haters, media, and critics head on. The video was shot by Hype Williams, and featured Nas and Puff Daddy being crucified within the video, which led to major controversy at the time.
Now this is where the story gets interesting. The story goes that Puff had second thoughts about the video, and asked to be edited out of the final version. But it was too late, and TRL premiered the unedited cut to the world. Within minutes, it is said that Puffy had his bodyguards allegedly assault music exec Steve Stoute in his office, where he was rumored to be hit over the head with a champagne bottle.
